The Capital

Male', the capital of the Maldives, is the commercial center, seat of government and the location of many important historical and religious landmarks. With an area of just over 1.77 squares Km, it is home to over seventy thousand people, and the busiest and the most populous island in the archipelago. In the past, it has been known as the Sultan's island.

Different from any other island in the country, Male' is a city with high buildings and paved roads. While the government offices are located in a specific area, the main streets host shops and offices. In the old bazaar area, dedicated to the wholesale and retail trade, the streets are so narrow that a vehicle could not pass through, especially when it is crowded.

There are no beaches, but seawalls around Male'. However in a new district an artificial beach with a nice landscape has been created and it is a nice itinerary for a walk or for jogging or for swimming. In addition there is an area specially made for swimming and snorkeling where you can enjoy sun and the sea.

Male' is the busiest place for shopping, given the choice and variety of goods available in this center of commercial activity. Local and imported handicrafts and souvenirs, cigarettes and electronic items are sold. The prices in Male' have now become highly competitive, with minimum or no duty levied on most items. Most of the souvenir shops are in the main business area which is only a five-minute walk from the jetty. It is always better to browse through a few shops before choosing what to buy.

The shops recommended by guides or shop assistants volunteering to be guides are not necessarily the best places for shopping. There are many carts in the main road around the island from where you can buy Coconut Drinks (Kurumba), soft drinks and other local short eats. There are several options to get around in Male' like Bus Services and taxi service. In fact the island is just 2 miles you can walk to the other end by foot within 30 minutes. It will be a good experience to walk around the island and to walk through the main roads as there are lots of shops, restaurants and sightseeing areas.

VILLIN-GILI ISLAND - (PICNIC ISLAND) which is Next Island located just nearby the capital Male'. You can go to Villin-gili Island by a Ferry Boat and it takes about 5 minutes boat ride to reach this beautiful sandy beach island. Most of the Tourists who stays in Male City go to Villin-gili Island in the morning on Picnic and return in the evening when sunset. You can enjoy sun tanning, swimming and snorkeling. There are local Cafes and shops selling cool drinks in the island .
